You can visit Castel Sant'Angelo for free on the first Sunday of the month, thanks to the national initiative #DomenicalMuseum. of Ministry of Culture. On these dates admission is free for all.

When is free admission to the Castel Sant'Angelo?

First Sunday of the month (#DomenicalMuseo)

The first Sunday of the month is the time when Castel Sant'Angelo opens its doors for free to all visitors. This is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture involving state museums and sites throughout Italy. In Rome, Hadrian's Fortress is one of the most popular destinations on these days.

No online reservation needed: To enter, you simply need to present yourself at the entrance and pick up your free ticket at the cash register or totems. Keep in mind that access is regulated on a first-come, first-served basis, so the files are unavoidable, especially in the middle hours of the day.

The museum is open with the usual hours (9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., last admission 6:30 p.m.), but the turnout is definitely higher than on a normal day. Therefore, if you want to enjoy the experience to the fullest, it is advisable to arrive early in the morning or early afternoon.

Remember: during the #DomenicalMuseo the free ticket covers access to the standard museum tour, including the indoor halls and the spectacular rooftop terrace. Some special tours or temporary exhibitions, however, may have separate rules and require a separate reservation.

Extraordinary free days (events and anniversaries)

In addition to the first Sunday of the month, Castel Sant'Angelo can be free on special occasions decided by the Ministry of Culture. Three "classic" dates have recurred in recent years: April 25 (Liberation Day), June 2 (Republic Day) e November 4 (National Unity and Armed Forces Day).

The openings are announced from time to time with official releases and events. Before you get organized, always check the notice of the month.

To give you a concrete reference: June 2, 2025 the National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo has open for free with the usual times, as per MiC event tab.

Other confirmations come from previous years: for the November 4, 2024 the MiC reiterated the national gratuity, and for the November 4, 2023 there was also the event dedicated right in Castel Sant'Angelo, without reservation.

As you enter these days

Beware, however, of special warnings: It may happen that the entity Provides for gratuities related to internal events with booking by name. Who gets in for free all year round

• EU tour guides and interpreters on duty: Free by presenting valid license; for interpreters applies when needed alongside the guide.
• Qualified members and staff: Free of charge for MiC staff, ICOM members, TPC Core Military, ICCROM members, operators of affiliated voluntary associations.
• Journalists: Free with card in good standing (three-year facility as per DG-Musei decree).
• Union schools (upon request): Free for EU school groups with reservations and quotas set by management. Possible study/research admissions by reasoned request.

Do not confuse free with reduced 18-25: i young people 18-25 pay 2 € year-round in state museums. It is a'national facilitation other than gratuitousness.

How to enter the free days

Here is basically how the free day at Castel Sant'Angelo works.

1. Check the date. Free of charge applies on the first Sunday of the month (#DomenicalMuseo) and on certain national holidays announced by the MiC; official notices specify month by month whether reservations are needed (usually not) and the times applied.
2. Introduce yourself at the entrance and get in line. No online booking. On free Sundays and special free days, everyone, individuals and groups, stand in a single line to pick up their free unnamed ticket at the venue.
3. Pick up your free ticket. You pick it up at the cash register (and, when indicated by the institution, also at the totems on the premises). Then access in order of arrival.
4. Keep to the schedule. The museum, unless otherwise announced, is open 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with last admission 6:30 p.m. Arrive early if you want to reduce your wait.
5. If you are a group remember that on free days there are no online reservations not even for groups: you will have to pick up tickets at the venue and follow the single line. On other days, group reservations are required with dedicated time slots.
6. Accessibility and services. Access for people with disabilities may be partial in some historic areas; no checkroom provided. Plan light bags and comfortable shoes.
7. Special and evening tours. Evening events may involve reduced routes and separate rules; the Passetto di Borgo is by reservation with a dedicated schedule. These activities do not automatically qualify for free admission unless specifically advised.

What is included and what is not

On the free day enter with a complimentary ticket and visit the ordinary museum route.

It means Interior halls, collections, papal apartments and the panoramic terrace of the castle. The terrace is part of the standard route indicated by official channels and dedicated information portals.

Therefore, access to the museum during regular hours is included (usually 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., last entry 6:30 p.m.) with regular itinerary. Free admission covers admission; arrangements are announced month by month by official bodies.

However, special tours and dedicated activities such as Passetto di Borgo are generally not included. or evening openings. They have separate schedule, rules and ticket. On evenings the route may be shortened and groups are not allowed.

Extra services such as guided tours are likewise excluded, audioguides, combined tours and "hopping" accesses that are paid products.

Passetto di Borgo and special tours for free

I am sorry to say that the Passetto di Borgo is not free On "free museum" days.

This is a reservation-based activity with a dedicated ticket; free of charge applies to museum admission. Exceptions are made only for any special openings announced by the institutions.

In particular, from the December 23, 2024 the elevated corridor is back open to visitors with a permanent program of guided tours.

Remember that the Passetto tickets are named, so bring along the ID.

What is always free

Do you want to breathe in the atmosphere of Castel Sant'Angelo without spending anything? You have two stages always free right outside the museum.

The first is the Sant'Angelo Bridge, the historic bridge which connects the center to the Castle, famous for the statues of angels designed by the Bernini. The museum is Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with last entry at 6:30 p.m.. 

Remains closed on Mondays, December 25 e January 1 (unless extraordinary openings are announced by MiC). 

On some summer dates there are evening openings with shortened route e last entry anticipated. Always check the month's notice before leaving.

Access for people with disabilities is partial in some historical areas; staff on site help to modulate the path. From December 3, 2024 are in progress NRP work To improve accessibility: detours and changes in the ground floor route can be active.

There is no wardrobe so organize with small bags.

Practical tips for your free Sunday

The Sunday free Is a very good idea, but it pays get organized.
